Podpage - Reporting Accounts podcast site

We are pleased with the progress we are making with our podcasting, we now have a mini website dedicated to all our podcasting initiatives.

It's such a good site and was so easy to build using the podpage site builder, which constructs most of it for you using an RSS feed.

https://www.podpage.com/reporting-accounts-news-and-updates/

It even has a store area, though we don't sell any T-shirts yet, the idea is a good one though!

Gumroad - an interesting site

Found a new site today, it seems really strong in terms of authority and reputation so have published there for the first time.

Gumroad is an online platform that facilitates the sale of products by creators directly to consumers. Sahil Lavingia founded the company in 2011 with the intention of making selling as easy as social sharing. Although Lavingia claimed "I don’t think five years ago this could have existed", there have been companies with a similar purpose since 2004, such as PayLoadz, E-junkie, and TradeBit. The company received more than $8 million in funding. Within three years Gumroad had to lay-off most of its staff to stay afloat.
Founder Sahil Lavingia in 2010

https://gumroad.com/aurthor/p/reasons-for-podcast-covering-finance-news

Creators such as authors, comedians, designers, filmmakers, musicians, and software developers use Gumroad to sell products directly to consumers; mostly digital content like albums, comics, ebooks, films, games, music, or tutorials. Gumroad is built as a plug-and-play product that offers payment processing, file hosting and delivery, marketing and communications tools, and consumption experiences for a diverse array of verticals[clarification needed]. Lavingia has stated that his product philosophy is to ask what creators spend their time on making things, and then build features for Gumroad that do those above-mentioned logistics functions for them.[citation needed]

Gumroad's marketplace is decentralized. It was also originally notable for having a lower fee than other commerce platforms (5% + 25¢). The service later changed its fee structure, requiring a monthly hosting fee (USD$10) plus an additional per-transaction charge (3.5% + 30¢).

Mixing it up

Many years ago I used to be a fan of delicio.us but it had its day and fell out of favour, around a year ago they re-invented themselves as mix.com and I must admit to really liking it, every time I make a blog post over on my main sitesI am now in the routine of "mixing it up" ))

https://mix.com/adrianlawrence

The above is my personal mix.  I use this for personal use, sites I like the look of and the occassional one from my blog list.

There is then the company one, mostly just use it for in house blog posting and any of the companies that we watch at work, competitors and suppliers etc.

https://mix.com/reportingaccts

Both sites were good in their days, and you can't judge things in the past by today's standards, so I would say they are both as good as each other during each others time.

Pinterest revamp

I noticed that Pinterest revamped their site recently, so I spend a little time last month improving my pinterest account and converting it to a business one

I am pretty happy with my progress https://www.pinterest.com/adrianlawrence100/_created/

They also have a community site for business

https://community.pinterest.biz/t5/business-chat/best-way-to-drive-traffic-to-a-business-site/td-p/11958

Their community is great but you can't link to your own site without it being against their TOS, but it does link to my Pinterest account which must be helpful to raise its authority level, or at least I imagine so.

The development of Pinterest began in December 2009, and the site launched the prototype as a closed beta in March 2010. Nine months after the launch, the website had 10,000 users. Silbermann said he personally wrote to the first 5,000 users, offering his personal phone number and even meeting with some of them. The launch of an iPhone app in early March 2011 brought in more downloads than expected. This was followed by an iPad app[10] and Pinterest Mobile, a version of the website for non-iPhone users.Silbermann and a few programmers operated the site out of a small apartment until the summer of 2011

https://community.pinterest.biz/t5/user/viewprofilepage/user-id/8435

Pinterest grew rapidly during this period. On August 10, 2011, Time magazine listed Pinterest in its "50 Best Websites of 2011" article. In December 2011, the site became one of the top 10 largest social network services, according to Hitwise data, with 11 million total visits per week. Pinterest won the Best New Startup of 2011 at the TechCrunch Crunchies Awards. For January 2012, comScore reported the site had 11.7 million unique U.S. visitors, making it the fastest site ever to break through the 10 million unique visitor mark. At the 2012 Webby Awards, Pinterest won Best Social Media App and People's Voice Award for best functioning visual design.

Music sites and tracks from my youth ))

Having fun reposting and listening too some of the fav tracks from my youth.  I am using three of the most popular sites for that

What is good about all of these sites is that they let you message and communicate with real people who have the same tastes in music as you do.

Podcasting Channel of our own.

We've been working on our own podcasts since January 1st 2021, it was something like a New Years resolutions to try this area, plus having time free during the UK's third lockdown.  Anyway we've now started a dedicated blogspot to cover everything to do with our podcasting activities.

https://getpodcasting.blogspot.com/

We are not sure at this stage how much of a benefit it is, but a lot of the sites concerned seem to be high quality and have active communities so its enjoyable being part of this, and something like Radio it is fun and rewarding to hear your own voice around the internet!

Recording weekly and sometimes daily episodes at the moment.

We also have another blogspot but it doesn't get much attention https://compellingmedia888.blogspot.com/

Johnson Matthey

Johnson Matthey traces its origins to 1817, when Percival Norton Johnson set up business as a gold assayer in London. In 1851 George Matthey joined the business and its name was changed to Johnson & Matthey. The following year the firm was appointed official assayer and refiner to the Bank of England. The company had branches in the cities of Birmingham and Sheffield to supply the jewellery and silverware and cutlery trade with raw materials and ancillary supplies, such as silver solder and flux, which it manufactured.

https://www.thundafunda.com/johnson-matthey-plc/

In 1874, the company was commissioned to manufacture the kilogram reference standard, made from 90% platinum and 10% iridium, and held in the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (International Bureau of Weights and Measures).

The origins of Companies House date back to 1844

The origins of Companies House date back to 1844, the year the Joint Stock Companies Act received royal assent, enabling companies to be incorporated by registration for the first time. The Act created the office of the Registrar of Joint Stock Companies to maintain the register of companies, which was publicly accessible. It was hoped by MPs of the day that a publicly accessible central company register would help to protect the public from fraud. All companies, irrespective of their method of incorporation, were obliged to register within three months of the commencement of the Act.

https://www.mortgages.tips/2021/01/08/who-are-companies-house-in-the-uk/

The Act provided for two types of company registration: provisional, and complete. The filing requirements for complete registration were more extensive than those for provisional registration. Given that there was no requirement for companies granted a certificate of provisional registration to submit the remaining information in order to become completely registered, the Act was not hugely successful as many of its provisions applied only to completely registered companies.

The Joint Stock Companies Act 1844 applied only to England and Wales, and Ireland; it did not apply to Scotland.

Background checks

A background check is a process a person or company uses to verify that an individual is who they claim to be, and this provides an opportunity to check and confirm the validity of someone's criminal record, education, employment history, and other activities from their past. The frequency, purpose, and legitimacy of background checks varies among countries, industries, and individuals. An employment background check typically takes place when someone applies for a job, but it can also happen at any time the employer deems necessary.

http://www.loanblog.net/how-to-check-the-health-of-a-company/

A variety of methods are used to complete these checks including comprehensive database search and personal references.

Chartered accountants

Chartered accountants were the first accountants to form a professional accounting body, initially established in Scotland in 1854. The Edinburgh Society of Accountants (1854), the Glasgow Institute of Accountants and Actuaries (1854) and the Aberdeen Society of Accountants (1867) were each granted a royal charter almost from their inception. The title is an internationally recognised professional designation; the certified public accountant designation is generally equivalent to it. Women were able to become chartered accountants only following the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act 1919 after which, in 1920, Mary Harris Smith was recognised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and became the first woman chartered accountant in the world.

https://sfbayconcerts.com/why-use-a-chartered-accountant/

Chartered accountants work in all fields of business and finance, including auditing, taxation, financial and general management. Some are engaged in public practice work, others work in the private sector and some are employed by government bodies.

Royal Dutch Shell

Royal Dutch Shell, commonly known as Shell, is a British-Dutch multinational oil and gas company headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands and incorporated in the United Kingdom as a public limited company (PLC). It is one of the oil and gas "supermajors" and the fifth-largest company in the world measured by 2020 revenues (and the largest based in Europe). In the 2020 Forbes Global 2000, Royal Dutch Shell was ranked as the 21st-largest public company in the world. Shell was first in the 2013 Fortune Global 500 list of the world's largest companies; in that year its revenues were equivalent to 84% of the Dutch national $556 billion GDP.

https://thedailynotes.com/royal-dutch-shell-plc/

Shell is vertically integrated and is active in every area of the oil and gas industry, including exploration and production, refining, transport, distribution and marketing, petrochemicals, power generation, and trading. It also has renewable energy activities, including biofuels, wind,energy-kite systems, and hydrogen. Shell has operations in over 70 countries, produces around 3.7 million barrels of oil equivalent per day and has 44,000 service stations worldwide. As of 31 December 2014, Shell had total proved reserves of 13.7 billion barrels (2.18×109 m3) of oil equivalent.[note 1] Shell Oil Company, its principal subsidiary in the United States, is one of its largest businesses. Shell holds 50% of Raízen, a joint venture with Cosan, which is the third-largest Brazil-based energy company by revenues and a major producer of ethanol

Value Added Tax - VAT

A value-added tax (VAT), known in some countries as a goods and services tax (GST), is a type of tax that is assessed incrementally. It is levied on the price of a product or service at each stage of production, distribution, or sale to the end consumer. If the ultimate consumer is a business that collects and pays to the government VAT on its products or services, it can reclaim the tax paid. It is similar to, and is often compared with, a sales tax.

http://romsdeals.com/bedroom/how-to-check-a-uk-vat-number/

VAT essentially compensates for the shared service and infrastructure provided in a certain locality by a state and funded by its taxpayers that were used in the provision of that product or service.[citation needed] Not all localities require VAT to be charged, and exports are often exempt. VAT is usually implemented as a destination-based tax, where the tax rate is based on the location of the consumer and applied to the sales price. The terms VAT, GST, and the more general consumption tax are sometimes used interchangeably. VAT raises about a fifth of total tax revenues both worldwide and among the members of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).[1]:14 As of 2018, 166 of the 193 countries with full UN membership employ a VAT, including all OECD members except the United States,:14 where many states use a sales tax system instead.

Directors responsibilites

The requirement for directors' reports arose out of a general move for greater transparency in corporate governance. It is useful for shareholders to find out issues such as whether the company has good finances, whether the market has potential, and whether the business has the structural capacity to expand into new opportunities. In order for shareholders to make informed decisions when casting their votes at annual or other meetings, the Directors' Report provides part of that essential minimum standard of information. It is complemented by the Director's Remuneration Report and the Company Accounts. Much of the Directors' Report requirements are basic harmonised standards in all European companies, through the Accounts Modernisation Directive, but the UK chose to go further in the interests of greater transparency and accountability.

https://www.lifeandexperiences.com/united-kinguk-limited-company-director-responsibilities/

Directors' reports must be disclosed to the public, and so also serve as an important source of public information, as a form of social accounting. Following its introduction, the reports (under various names) had a bumpy history. As previously named, the Operating and Financial Review was said by Gordon Brown to be unnecessary ‘goldplating’ of EU regulations. Brown initially proposed scrapping it, stating it was important to place ‘trust in the responsible company’. He was widely criticised by charities, social foundations and environmental groups, leading the government to backtrack on its plan for scrappage. The present requirements are found in the Companies Act 2006. As well as social accounting these reports are used for credit-checking uses, to assess investor-worthiness and to gain background information on an

A credit score is a numerical expression based on a level analysis

A credit score is a numerical expression based on a level analysis of a person's credit files, to represent the creditworthiness of an individual. A credit score is primarily based on a credit report, information typically sourced from credit bureaus.

Lenders, such as banks and credit card companies, use credit scores to evaluate the potential risk posed by lending money to consumers and to mitigate losses due to bad debt. Lenders use credit scores to determine who qualifies for a loan, at what interest rate, and what credit limits. Lenders also use credit scores to determine which customers are likely to bring in the most revenue. The use of credit or identity scoring prior to authorizing access or granting credit is an implementation of a trusted system.

https://nob6.com/why-you-must-perform-a-company-check/

Credit scoring is not limited to banks. Other organizations, such as mobile phone companies, insurance companies, landlords, and government departments employ the same techniques. Digital finance companies such as online lenders also use alternative data sources to calculate the creditworthiness of borrowers.

Crest Nicholson

The company was founded by Bryan Skinner in 1963 as Crest Homes and floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1968. One of the characteristics that differentiated Crest from most other housebuilders of the time was “not to hold large stocks of land”.

Crest’s first diversification was in 1969 when it bought En-Tout-Cas, the leading name in tennis court construction. More significant was the 1971 acquisition of Tony Pidgley’s earth moving business. Pidgley teamed up with Jim Farrer, a board member and originally the estate agent who had provided Skinner with his first land. These two ran Crest’s housing until 1975 when they left to form Berkeley Homes.

https://5bestthings.com/crest-nicholson-holdings-plc/

In 1972, a new holding company, Crest Securities, was formed to facilitate further diversification. At the end of that year, Crest bought Camper & Nicholsons, the leading yacht maker, hence the change of name to Crest Nicholson. More unrelated acquisitions followed in the form of Lamson Engineering (1975), the spectacle makers Crofton (1979) and Greenwood Electronics (1983). Crest also bought the west-country construction firm of CH Pearce in 1985.

Bryan Skinner retired through ill health in 1983 and, gradually, much of the earlier strategy was reversed. Non-housing businesses were sold in the late 1980s and in the housing division Crest began to follow a policy of acquiring a long land bank.

Digital nomads

Digital nomads are people who use telecommunications technologies to earn a living and, more generally, conduct their life in a nomadic manner. Such workers often work remotely from foreign countries, coffee shops, public libraries, co-working spaces, or recreational vehicles. This is often accomplished through the use of devices that have wireless Internet capabilities such as smartphones or mobile hotspots. Successful digital nomads typically have a financial cushion or need to develop high levels of self-reliance and self-discipline The digital nomad community has had various events established to host members of it.

 https://thecustomercollective.com/how-moving-to-work-remotely-could-affect-your-taxes/

Common types of digital nomads include retired or semi-retired persons (including snowbirds), independently wealthy or entrepreneurs, and (often younger) remote workers. People typically become digital nomads for positive reasons, such as financial independence and a career that allows for location independence. Although digital nomads enjoy advantages in freedom and flexibility, they report loneliness as their biggest struggle, followed by burnout. This lifestyle may present other challenges as well such as maintaining international health insurance with coverage globally, abiding by different local laws, and sometimes obtaining work visas.

The importance of banks in the financial stability and the economy of a country

A bank is a financial institution that accepts deposits from the public and creates a demand deposit while simultaneously making loans. Lending activities can be directly performed by the bank or indirectly through capital markets.

Due to the importance of banks in the financial stability and the economy of a country, most jurisdictions exercise a high degree of regulation over banks. Most countries have institutionalized a system known as fractional reserve banking, under which banks hold liquid assets equal to only a portion of their current liabilities. In addition to other regulations intended to ensure liquidity, banks are generally subject to minimum capital requirements based on an international set of capital standards, the Basel Accords.

https://menaentrepreneur.org/2020/11/a-review-of-the-uk-banking-sector/

Banking in its modern sense evolved in the fourteenth century in the prosperous cities of Renaissance Italy but in many ways functioned as a continuation of ideas and concepts of credit and lending that had their roots in the ancient world. In the history of banking, a number of banking dynasties — notably, the Medicis, the Fuggers, the Welsers, the Berenbergs, and the Rothschilds — have played a central role over many centuries. The oldest existing retail bank is Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena (founded in 1472), while the oldest existing merchant bank is Berenberg Bank (founded in 1590).

Accounting or Accountancy is the measurement, processing, and communication of financial and non financial information

Accounting or Accountancy is the measurement, processing, and communication of financial and non financial information about economic entities such as businesses and corporations. Accounting, which has been called the "language of business", measures the results of an organization's economic activities and conveys this information to a variety of users, including investors, creditors, management, and regulators. Practitioners of accounting are known as accountants. The terms "accounting" and "financial reporting" are often used as synonyms.

https://www.smartbusinessdaily.com/overview-accountancy-uk/

Accounting can be divided into several fields including financial accounting, management accounting, external auditing, tax accounting and cost accounting. Accounting information systems are designed to support accounting functions and related activities. Financial accounting focuses on the reporting of an organization's financial information, including the preparation of financial statements, to the external users of the information, such as investors, regulators and suppliers; and management accounting focuses on the measurement, analysis and reporting of information for internal use by management. The recording of financial transactions, so that summaries of the financials may be presented in financial reports, is known as bookkeeping, of which double-entry bookkeeping is the most common system.

Companies House is the United Kingdom's registrar of companies

Companies House is the United Kingdom's registrar of companies and is an executive agency and trading fund of Her Majesty's Government, falling under the remit of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. All forms of companies (as permitted by the United Kingdom Companies Act) are incorporated and registered with Companies House and file specific details as required by legislation. All registered limited companies, including subsidiary, small and inactive companies, must file annual financial statements in addition to annual company returns, and all these are public records.

 https://www.topicstalk.com/how-to-research-a-uk-company/

Only some registered unlimited companies (meeting certain conditions) are exempt from this requirement.

The United Kingdom has had a system of company registration since 1844. The legislation governing company registration matters is the Companies Act 2006.

Why do companies pay their bills late?

The Late Payment Directive, 2011/7/EU is a Directive of the European Union concerning commercial late payments. It replaced the previous Late Payment Directive 2000/35/EC.

Like all European Union directives, this is an instrument which requires member states to enact its provisions in national legislation by 16 March 2013.[3] The directive applies to all member states.

The directive aims to achieve 'a decisive shift to a culture of prompt payment' and requires debtors to pay interest and the reasonable recovery costs of the creditor if they do not pay for goods or services on time. The limits are within 60 days for businesses and within 30 days for public authorities.

In Ireland, the Directive has been implemented through the European Communities (Late Payment in Commercial Transactions) Regulations 2012. In the United Kingdom, the Directive was implemented through the Late Payment of Commercial Debts Regulations 2013 (SI 395/2013).

https://www.treehousebusinesscentre.org/why-do-companies-pay-their-bills-late/

In 2016, the European Commission reported concerns that in commercial relations, businesses, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), are reluctant to:

(a) Dispute the terms of a contract (ex. payment term, rate of interest for late payment etc.)

(b) Chase the payment of their unpaid invoices

(c) Claim interest for late payment and compensation for recovery costs

(d) Refer the buyer to court for non-respect of the agreed contractual terms.

In an invitation to tender issued on 19 July 2016, the Commission has indicated its intention to undertake "an in-depth assessment of measures, both regulatory and voluntary, that have been put in place in the Member States to address the problem of late payment in commercial relations between undertakings"

Hargreaves Lansdown

The company was founded on 1 July 1981 by Peter Hargreaves and Stephen Lansdown who had initially traded from a bedroom. Hargreaves Lansdown initially provided information to clients on unit trusts and tax planning matters. Now, the company has grown to be one of the largest in Bristol, located at One College Square, Harbourside.

The company was first listed on the London Stock Exchange in May 2007, with the company's two founders then holding combined stakes equivalent to 80% in the business. In April 2009, Lansdown sold a stake of 4.7% for a sum of £47.2million to put towards the cost of building Bristol City FC's new football stadium, reducing his stake to 22.9%.

https://businessowl.co.za/business-articles/an-overview-of-hargreaves-lansdown-plc/

In 2019 Hargreaves Lansdown suffered reputational damage when trading was suspended on 4 June 2019 in the Woodford Investment Management fund, which Hargreaves Lansdown had been promoting through its Wealth 50 list despite concerns about the fund's investment strategy and underperformance. On 5 October 2019, retired founder Peter Hargreaves, still the owner of 32% of Hargreaves Lansdown, was reported to say:

It’s annoyed the hell out of me that it would appear he [Woodford] has not been truthful with Hargreaves Lansdown. But it’s also annoyed me that they [Hargreaves Lansdown] let it go on so long ... The clients have been stuffed in this horrible Woodford fund.

Company formation UK

Company formation is the term for the process of incorporation of a business in the UK. It is also sometimes referred to as company registration. These terms are both also used when incorporating a business in the Republic of Ireland. Under UK company law and most international law, a company or corporation is considered an entity that is separate from the people who own or operate the company.

https://jealouscomputers.com/how-to-setup-a-company-in-the-uk/

Today the majority of UK companies are formed the same day electronically. Companies can be created by individuals, specialised agents, solicitors or accountants. Many solicitors and accountants subcontract incorporation out to specialised company formation agents. Most agents offer company formation packages for less than £100. The cost of carrying out paper filing directly with Companies House is £20. This fee does not include the cost of witnessing documents or preparation of memorandum & articles of association for the company, which would usually be carried out by a solicitor or accountant. Forming a company via the paper filing method can take up to 4 weeks.

Microsoft

Childhood friends Bill Gates and Paul Allen sought to make a business using their skills in computer programming. In 1972, they founded Traf-O-Data, which sold a rudimentary computer to track and analyze automobile traffic data. Gates enrolled at Harvard University while Allen pursued a degree in computer science at Washington State University, though he later dropped out to work at Honeywell. The January 1975 issue of Popular Electronics featured Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems's (MITS) Altair 8800 microcomputer, which inspired Allen to suggest that they could program a BASIC interpreter for the device.

 https://www.raletta.in/blog/microsoft-uk-corporation/

Gates called MITS and claimed that he had a working interpreter, and MITS requested a demonstration. Allen worked on a simulator for the Altair while Gates developed the interpreter, and it worked flawlessly when they demonstrated it to MITS in March 1975 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. MITS agreed to distribute it, marketing it as Altair BASIC.:108, 112–114 Gates and Allen established Microsoft on April 4, 1975, with Gates as CEO, and Allen suggested the name "Micro-Soft", short for micro-computer software. In August 1977, the company formed an agreement with ASCII Magazine in Japan, resulting in its first international office of ASCII Microsoft. Microsoft moved its headquarters to Bellevue,

Business plans may be internally or externally focused.

Business plans may be internally or externally focused. Externally-focused plans draft goals that are important to outside stakeholders, particularly financial stakeholders. These plans typically have detailed information about the organization or the team making effort to reach its goals. With for-profit entities, external stakeholders include investors and customers, for non-profits, external stakeholders refer to donors and clients, for government agencies, external stakeholders are the tax-payers, higher-level government agencies, and international lending bodies such as the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, various economic agencies of the United Nations, and development banks.

Internally-focused business plans target intermediate goals required to reach the external goals. They may cover the development of a new product, a new service, a new IT system, a restructuring of finance, the refurbishing of a factory or a restructuring of the organization. An internally-focused business plan is often developed in conjunction with a balanced scorecard or a list of critical success factors. This allows the success of the plan to be measured using non-financial measures.

https://diggyinsurance.com/how-to-prepare-a-business-plan/

Business plans that identify and target internal goals, but provide only general guidance on how they will be met are called strategic plans.

Operational plans describe the goals of an internal organization, working group or department. Project plans, sometimes known as project frameworks, describe the goals of a particular project. They may also address the project's place within the organization's larger strategic goals.

Manchester Airport

Officially opened on 25 June 1938, it was initially known as Ringway Airport, and is still called this locally. In World War II, as RAF Ringway, it was a base for the Royal Air Force. The airport is owned and managed by the Manchester Airport Holdings (trading as MAG), a holding company owned by the Australian finance house IFM Investors and the ten metropolitan borough councils of Greater Manchester, with Manchester City Council owning the largest stake. Ringway, after which the airport was named, is a village with a few buildings and church at the southern edge of the airport.

https://www.internetvibes.net/2020/09/18/england-airports-manchester-airport/

Future developments include the £800 million Airport City Manchester logistics, manufacturing, office and hotel space next to the airport. Ongoing and future transport improvements include the £290 million Eastern Link relief road, which opened in October 2018. A High Speed 2 station known as Manchester Interchange, earmarked for opening in 2033, will create a regular sub-10-minute shuttle service for connecting rail passengers between central Manchester and the Airport while relieving stress on the Styal Line to the Airport from Manchester which has become one of the most congested routes on the National Rail network.

Boohoo

Boohoo's core products include dresses and tops, with a selection of over 27,000 styles of clothing. Boohoo has been criticised for promoting fast-fashion which critics claim comes at a cost to those making the clothes and the environment. More than half of Boohoo's garments are produced in the UK, especially Leicester, London, and Manchester. Boohoo buys 75%–80% of the clothing produced in Leicester. This was made possible when other retailers such as ASOS reduced the amount they sourced from Leicester over concerns about working conditions.

https://yamazaj.com/boohoo-group-plc/

In 2017, the Channel 4 television documentary series Dispatches found that factories in Leicester supplying Boohoo (along with New Look, River Island, and Missguided) were paying workers less than the national minimum wage. Boohoo stated that the work had been subcontracted without their knowledge. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Boohoo reported an increase in sales. In late June, workers' rights group Labour Behind the Label produced a report that stated factories supplying Boohoo were not following to social distancing and forcing employees to work even if sick, claims that Boohoo denied. This was followed by an investigative report by The Sunday Times which claimed to have found that workers producing clothes for BooHoo were paid £3.50 an hour, less than half the UK minimum wage for over 25s.

The powers, duties, and responsibilities of a board of directors

The powers, duties, and responsibilities of a board of directors are determined by government regulations (including the jurisdiction's corporate law) and the organization's own constitution and bylaws. These authorities may specify the number of members of the board, how they are to be chosen, and how often they are to meet.

In an organization with voting members, the board is accountable to, and may be subordinate to, the organization's full membership, which usually elect the members of the board. In a stock corporation, non-executive directors are elected by the shareholders, and the board has ultimate responsibility for the management of the corporation. In nations with codetermination (such as Germany and Sweden), the workers of a corporation elect a set fraction of the board's members.

http://www.dezzain.com/business/5-reasons-to-check-company-directors/

The board of directors appoints the chief executive officer of the corporation and sets out the overall strategic direction. In corporations with dispersed ownership, the identification and nomination of directors (that shareholders vote for or against) are often done by the board itself, leading to a high degree of self-perpetuation. In a non-stock corporation with no general voting membership, the board is the supreme governing body of the institution, and its members are sometimes chosen by the board itself.

Superior knowledge of rivals offers a legitimate source of competitive advantage

The strategic rationale of competitor profiling is simple. Superior knowledge of rivals offers a legitimate source of competitive advantage. The raw material of competitive advantage consists of offering superior customer value in the firm's chosen market. The definitive characteristic of customer value is the adjective, superior. Customer value is defined relative to rival offerings making competitor knowledge an intrinsic component of corporate strategy. Profiling facilitates this strategic objective in three important ways.

https://falconhive.com/why-it-pays-to-do-your-research-on-customers-and-suppliers/

First, profiling can reveal strategic weaknesses in rivals that the firm may exploit. Second, the proactive stance of competitor profiling will allow the firm to anticipate the strategic response of their rivals to the firm's planned strategies, the strategies of other competing firms, and changes in the environment. Third, this proactive knowledge will give the firms strategic agility. Offensive strategy can be implemented more quickly in order to exploit opportunities and capitalize on strengths. Similarly, defensive strategy can be employed more deftly in order to counter the threat of rival firms from exploiting the firm's own weaknesses

Competitor analysis in marketing

Competitor analysis in marketing and strategic management is an assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of current and potential competitors. This analysis provides both an offensive and defensive strategic context to identify opportunities and threats. Profiling combines all of the relevant sources of competitor analysis into one framework in the support of efficient and effective strategy formulation, implementation, monitoring and adjustment.

https://www.veloceinternational.com/business/use-internet-learn-about-competitors/

Competitor analysis is an essential component of corporate strategy. It is argued that most firms do not conduct this type of analysis systematically enough. Instead, many enterprises operate on what is called "informal impressions, conjectures, and intuition gained through the tidbits of information about competitors every manager continually receives." As a result, traditional environmental scanning places many firms at risk of dangerous competitive blindspots due to a lack of robust competitor analysis. It is important to conduct the competitor analysis at various business stages to provide the best possible product or service for customers.

The history of Microsoft

n late 1974, Paul Allen, a programmer at Honeywell, was walking through Harvard Square when he saw the cover of the January 1975 issue of Popular Electronics that demonstrated the Altair 8800, the first microcomputer.Allen bought the magazine and rushed to Currier House at Harvard College, where he showed it to high school friend Bill Gates. They saw potential to develop an implementation of BASIC for the system.

Gates called Altair manufacturer Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS), offering to demonstrate the implementation. Allen and Gates had neither an interpreter nor an Altair system, yet in the eight weeks before the demo, they developed an interpreter with the help of Monte Davidoff. When Allen flew to Albuquerque to meet with MITS, the interpreter worked and MITS agreed to distribute Altair BASIC. Allen moved to Albuquerque, Gates soon quit Harvard to join him, and they co-founded Microsoft there. Revenues of the company totalled $16,005 by the end of 1976.

https://consciouslifenews.com/microsoft-uk-corporation/11192113/

Allen came up with the original name of Micro-Soft, a portmanteau of microcomputer and software. Hyphenated in its early incarnations, on November 26, 1976, the company was registered under that name with the Secretary of State of New Mexico. The company's first international office was founded on November 1, 1978, in Japan, entitled "ASCII Microsoft" (now called "Microsoft Japan"), and on November 29, 1979, the term, "Microsoft" was first used by Bill Gates.[9] On January 1, 1979, the company moved from Albuquerque to a new home in Bellevue, Washington,[9] since it was hard to recruit top programmers to Albuquerque. Shortly before the move, eleven of the then-thirteen employees posed for the staff photo on the right

Business Credit Reports

There are many credit management companies that specialize in business credit reports. These credit management companies are in the business of gathering the most predictive information on individuals and companies beforehand in order to assure that a company that has an interest in providing credit to another company or individual will have less worries on whether or not they will get paid and will not have to concern themselves with the risk associated with not knowing the borrowers history. Other uses of this report is to assess risk in extending loans to businesses, insuring businesses, underwriting insurance risk, purchasing businesses, investing in businesses or even company directors.

https://www.makemoneydirectories.com/what-is-a-business-credit-check-and-do-i-have-to-pay-for-it/

Credit management companies that specialize in offering business credit reports typically provide the most up to date information about business credit that’s available today, saving time, money and ensuring a completely sound and informed credit decision. This is in addition to companies who also provide consumer reports

Researching for a job interview

Potential job interview opportunities also include networking events and career fairs. The job interview is considered one of the most useful tools for evaluating potential employees. It also demands significant resources from the employer, yet has been demonstrated to be notoriously unreliable in identifying the optimal person for the job. An interview also allows the candidate to assess the corporate culture and demands of the job.

https://southafricatoday.net/business/researching-a-company-for-your-job-interview/

Multiple rounds of job interviews and/or other candidate selection methods may be used where there are many candidates or the job is particularly challenging or desirable. Earlier rounds sometimes called 'screening interviews' may involve fewer staff from the employers and will typically be much shorter and less in-depth. An increasingly common initial interview approach is the telephone interview. This is especially common when the candidates do not live near the employer and has the advantage of keeping costs low for both sides. Since 2003, interviews have been held through video conferencing software, such as Skype. Once all candidates have been interviewed, the employer typically selects the most desirable candidate(s) and begins the negotiation of a job offer.

Doubtful debts are those debts which a business or individual is unlikely to be able to collect. The reasons for potential non-payment can include disputes over supply, delivery, the condition of item or the appearance of financial stress within a customer's operations. When such a dispute occurs it is prudent to add this debt or portion there of to the doubtful debt reserve. This is done to avoid over-stating the assets of the business as trade debtors are reported net of Doubtful debt.

When there is no longer any doubt that a debt is uncollectible, the debt becomes bad. An example of a debt becoming uncollectible would be:- once final payments have been made from the liquidation of a customer's limited liability company, no further action can be taken.

https://locationary.com/how-to-avoid-customer-bad-debts/

A debt is defined as a debt which arises from a debtor-creditor relationship based upon a valid and enforceable obligation to pay a determinable sum of money. The debt in question must also be considered worthless. This distinction is further broken down into the level of collectibles. One must determine whether the qualifying debt is completely or partially worthless. A partially worthless status means a portion of the debt may be recovered in future periods. Numerous factors are taken into consideration including the debtor’s insolvency status, health conditions, credit standing, etc.

The objective of financial statements

The objective of financial statements is to provide information about the financial position, performance and changes in financial position of an enterprise that is useful to a wide range of users in making economic decisions." Financial statements should be understandable, relevant, reliable and comparable. Reported assets, liabilities, equity, income and expenses are directly related to an organization's financial position.

Financial statements are intended to be understandable by readers who have "a reasonable knowledge of business and economic activities and accounting and who are willing to study the information diligently." Financial statements may be used by users for different purposes:

Owners and managers require financial statements to make important business decisions that affect its continued operations. Financial analysis is then performed on these statements to provide management with a more detailed understanding of the figures. These statements are also used as part of management's annual report to the stockholders.

https://dukeo.com/company-financial-report/

Employees also need these reports in making collective bargaining agreements (CBA) with the management, in the case of labor unions or for individuals in discussing their compensation, promotion and rankings.

Prospective investors make use of financial statements to assess the viability of investing in a business. Financial analyses are often used by investors and are prepared by professionals (financial analysts), thus providing them with the basis for making investment decisions.

Financial institutions (banks and other lending companies) use them to decide whether to grant a company with fresh working capital or extend debt securities (such as a long-term bank loan or debentures) to finance expansion and other significant expenditures.

Carphone Warehouse

The company was co-founded in 1989 by Sir Charles Dunstone and Julian Brownlie, who put £6,000 into the company from their savings.Guy Johnson of NEC UK became the third partner at the company, later taking up the role of Logistics and Distribution director. In 1990, Dunstone brought in his school friend David Ross, a chartered accountant, who became Chief Operating Officer in the same year.

In January 1999, the company bought Tandy's operations in the United Kingdom for £9 million. In July 2000, Carphone Warehouse issued an IPO. In July 2001, Johnson sold the majority of his stake and retired. Carphone Warehouse bought Opal Telecom in November 2002.

http://cascadebusnews.com/dixons-carphone/

In 2003, Ross started to step down from the COO role. In July 2005, he became deputy chairman. On 10 October 2006, the Carphone Warehouse announced that it would purchase the Internet access business of AOL in the United Kingdom for £370m. Also in that month, it was announced that Geek Squad would be launching in the United Kingdom, in a 50/50 joint venture between Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy.

In May 2008, Best Buy agreed to buy a 50% share in Carphone Warehouse's retail business for £1.1 billion, to launch the Best Buy Europe joint venture, named CPW Europe. Best Buy and Carphone Warehouse also opened joint venture stores in the United States.
Ross, by now a non-executive director, resigned from the board in December 2008.

Microsoft Viva is an employee experience platform that empowers people and teams to be their best from wherever they work. Viva brings together communications, knowledge, learning, resources, and insights into an integrated employee experience.

Today, organizations spend over $300 billion a year on employee experience. That number includes employee development and training, benefits and wellbeing, and a whole host of employee experience technologies. But too often, these technologies are fragmented, hard to find, and disruptive to the flow of work.

As digital tools become more crucial to a great employee experience, business leaders across every industry are embracing the opportunity to learn, and they’re re-evaluating both their spending and their approach.

FD Capital the place for Portfolio FD's

A Portfolio Finance Director or Portfolio FD is a Finance Director who splits his or her time across a number of clients at the same time, so in effect has several part time roles at the same time. Working in this way makes good sense for all concerned.

An FD can make the most of their skills by focussing on roles which need their specialism the most whilst an employer gets to recruit an experienced senior professional often to what is an SME which stand alone would not be able to attract professionals of the highest calibre.

Here are FD Capital we are specialists at recruiting and supplying Portfolio Finance Directors, currently we focus on the West Midlands / Shropshire and London and the South East however from time to time we have clients who have roles out of area and can always find great candidates through our partners across the UK.

https://www.fdcapital.co.uk/podcasting-as-a-way-to-promote-your-business/

If you are an employers considering recruiting a role like this then reach out to us today, we also are always looking for additional FD’s to join our talented panel / network.

Typically a Portfolio FD will work around 4 days per week, so leaving flexibility to spend extra time with one or more clients supporting them during busier periods such as end of year, fund raising, acquisition or disposals and due diligence exercises.

Flickr so great for pics

Flickr (pronounced "flicker") is an American image hosting and video hosting service, as well as an online community. It was created by Ludicorp in 2004 and is a popular way for amateur and professional photographers to host high-resolution photos. It has changed ownership several times and has been owned by SmugMug since April 20, 2018.

As of March 20, 2013, Flickr had a total of 87 million registered members and more than 3.5 million new images uploaded daily, as reported by The Verge. On August 5, 2011, the site reported that it was hosting more than 6 billion images. Photos and videos can be accessed from Flickr without the need to register an account, but an account must be made to upload content to the site. Registering an account also allows users to create a profile page containing photos and videos that the user has uploaded and also grants the ability to add another Flickr user as a contact. For mobile users, Flickr has official mobile apps for iOS, Android, and an optimized mobile site.

My Flickr can be found here: https://www.flickr.com/people/adrianlawrence100/

Early versions of Flickr focused on a chat room called FlickrLive, with real-time photo exchange capabilities. The successive evolutions focused more on the uploading and filing back-end for individual users and the chat room was buried in the site map. It was eventually dropped as Flickr's back-end systems evolved away from Game Neverending's codebase. Key features of Flickr not initially present are tags, marking photos as favorites, group photo pools and interestingness, for which a patent is pending.

In addition to being a popular website for users to share and embed personal photographs and an online community, on December 9, 2004, the service was widely used by photo researchers and by bloggers to host images that they embed in blogs and social media.

Medium one of the top sites in the World

We are increasingly finding that Medium is now one of the strongest sites on the internet.

Evan Williams, Twitter co-founder and former CEO, created Medium to encourage users to create posts longer than the then 140-character limit of Twitter. When it launched in 2012, Williams stated, "There's been less progress toward raising the quality of what's produced." By April 2013, Williams reported there were 30 full-time staff working on the platform, including a vacancy for a "Storyteller" role, and that it was taking "98 percent" of his time.By August, Williams reported that the site was still small, although he was still optimistic about it, saying "We are trying to make it as easy as possible for people who have thoughtful things to say".

Medium has been focusing on optimizing the time visitors spend reading the site (1.5 million hours in March 2015), as opposed to maximizing the size of its audience. In 2015, Williams criticized the standard web traffic metric of unique visitors as "a highly volatile and meaningless number for what we're trying to do".According to the company, as of May 2017, Medium.com had 60 million unique monthly readers.

Amazon truly a dominant force

Amazon was founded by Jeff Bezos in Washington, on July 5, 1994. It started as an online marketplace for books but expanded to sell electronics, software, video games, apparel, furniture, food, toys, and jewelry. In 2015, Amazon surpassed Walmart as the most valuable retailer in the US In 2017, Amazon acquired  Whole Foods for US$13.4 billion, which substantially increased its footprint as a physical retailer. In 2018, its two-day delivery service, Amazon Prime, surpassed 100 million subscribers worldwide.

Amazon is now truly an international and dominant force around the World, they operate in all the major regions:  Amazon USA, Amazon UKAmazon Australia, Amazon Spain and Amazon Japan to name just a few.

It would be even better if more UK companies would step up and recognise the potential of the internet, more and more convential retailers are but it is late in the business cycle now for many, and they have learnt the hard way during the Pandemic lockdowns in the United Kingdom.

Youtube

We've never gotten very far with our YouTube Channel, though we have had a few goes at lifting its performance, none have made any great progress.

You can see out custom header above, which does have the mini logos in, which is a nice feature

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3RRJT5tqag - A trial of a podcast transcript service, it has potential but we need to spend some more time improving this.

The potential is clearly there it is just figuring out how to leverage it for the best opportunity for our business.

MS edge extensions

Microsoft Edge is the default web browser on Windows 10, Windows 10 Mobile, Xbox One and Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, replacing Internet Explorer 11 and Internet Explorer Mobile. As its development and release is dependent on the model of Windows as a service, it is not included in Windows 10 Enterprise Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) builds.
Microsoft initially announced that Edge would support the legacy Trident (MSHTML) layout engine for backwards compatibility, but later said that, due to "strong feedback," Edge would use a new engine, while Internet Explorer would continue to provide the legacy engine.

Favorites, reading list, browsing history and downloads are viewed at the Hub, a sidebar providing functionality similar to Internet Explorer's Downloads manager and Favorites Center.

The browser includes an integrated Adobe Flash Player (with an internal whitelist allowing Flash applets on Facebook websites to load automatically, bypassing all other security controls requiring user activation) and a PDF reader. It also supports asm.js.

Edge does not support legacy technologies such as ActiveX and Browser Helper Objects, instead it uses an extension system.
Internet Explorer 11 remains available alongside Edge on Windows 10 for compatibility; it remains identical to the Windows 8.1 version and does not use the Edge engine as was previously announced.
Edge integrates with Microsoft's online platforms to provide voice control, search functionality and dynamic information related to searches within the address bar. Users can make annotations to web pages that can be stored to and shared with OneDrive, and can save HTML and MHTML pages to their computers. It also integrates with the "Reading List" function and provides a "Reading Mode" that strips unnecessary formatting from pages to improve their legibility.

Preliminary support for browser extensions was added in March 2016, with build 14291, three extensions were initially supported. Microsoft indicated that the delay in allowing extensions and the small number was due to security concerns.

n December 2014, writing for ZDNet, technology writer Mary Jo Foley reported that Microsoft was developing a new web browser codenamed "Spartan" for Windows 10. She said that "Spartan" would be treated as a new product separate from Internet Explorer, with Internet Explorer 11 retained alongside it for compatibility.
In early January 2015, The Verge obtained further details surrounding "Spartan" from sources close to Microsoft, including reports that it would replace Internet Explorer on both the desktop and mobile versions of Windows 10.] Microsoft officially unveiled "Spartan" during a Windows 10-focused keynote on January 21, 2015.] It was described as a separate product from Internet Explorer, its final name was not announced.
"Spartan" was first made publicly available as the default browser of Windows 10 Technical Preview build 10049, released on March 30, 2015.[45] The new engine used by "Spartan" was available in Windows 10 builds as part of Internet Explorer 11, Microsoft later announced that Internet Explorer would be deprecated on Windows 10 and would not use the "Spartan" engine.
On April 29, 2015, during the Build Conference keynote, it was announced that "Spartan" would officially be known as Microsoft Edge.[47] The browser's logo and branding were designed to maintain continuity with the branding of Internet Explorer.[48] The Project "Spartan" branding was used in versions released after Build 2015. On June 25, 2015, Microsoft released version 19.10149 for Windows 10 Mobile which included the new brand. On June 28, 2015, version 20.10158 followed for the desktop versions, also including the updated branding. On July 15, 2015, Microsoft released version 20.10240 as the final release to Insiders. The same version was rolled out to consumers on July 29, 2015.

Yahoo news service

Yahoo! News is a news website that originated as an internet-based news aggregator by Yahoo!. The site was created by a Yahoo! software engineer named Brad Clawsie in August 1996. Articles originally came from news services such as the Associated Press, Reuters, Fox News, Al Jazeera, ABC News, USA Today, CNN and BBC News.

In 2001, Yahoo! News launched the first "most-emailed" page on the web. It was well-received as an innovative idea, expanding people's understanding of the impact that online news sources have on news consumption. Yahoo allowed comments for news articles until December 19, 2006, when commentary was disabled. Comments were re-enabled on March 2, 2010.

By 2011, Yahoo had expanded its focus to include original content, as part of its plans to become a major media organization. Veteran journalists (including Walter Shapiro and Virginia Heffernan) were hired, while the website had a correspondent in the White House press corps for the first time in February 2012. An Amazon-owned marketing data collection company (Alexa) claimed Yahoo! News one of the world's top news sites, at this point. Plans were made to add a Twitter feed.[7] In November, 2013, Yahoo hired former Today Show and CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric as Global Anchor of Yahoo! News. She left in 2017.

Yahoo! Celebrity (as omg!) debuted on June 12, 2007, with little fanfare, with the original press release being published on Yahoo!'s corporate blog. Upon launch, MediaWeek reported that Yahoo is hoping to skew more toward a female demographic with omg!, and that Unilever, Pepsi, and Axiata (Celcom & XL) will be the sole official sponsors of the website. Due to heavy publicity on Yahoo's front page and with its partnerships, readership took off, with four million readers logging on to omg! in the first 19 days alone.[11] As of autumn 2007, omg! registered over eight million readers a month, and is the second most-read gossip website in the United States, ahead of People and behind TMZ.com.

In December 2012, Yahoo! reached a deal with CBS Television Distribution to cross-promote its Entertainment Tonight spin-off The Insider with omg!, re-branding the show as omg! Insider. In January 2014 it was announced that CBS Television Distribution was to revert the name change back to The Insider while omg! would become Yahoo! Celebrity.

Social media sensations - Folkd and Reddit

Two really great social media sites which I always use to spread the message from my posts are Reddit and Folkd

Reddit

Registered members submit content to the site such as links, text posts, and images, which are then voted up or down by other members. Posts are organized by subject into user-created boards called "communities" or "subreddits", which cover a variety of topics such as news, politics, science, movies, video games, music, books, sports, fitness, cooking, pets, and image-sharing. Submissions with more up-votes appear towards the top of their subreddit and, if they receive enough up-votes, ultimately on the site's front page. Despite strict rules prohibiting harassment, Reddit's administrators spend considerable resources on moderating the site.

As of February 2021, Reddit ranks as the 18th-most-visited website in the world and 7th most-visited website in the US, according to Alexa  About 42-49.3% of its user base comes from the United States, followed by the United Kingdom at 7.9-8.2% and Canada at 5.2-7.8%

Reddit's logo consists of a time-traveling alien named Snoo and the company name stylized as "reddit". The alien has an oval head, pom-pom ears, and an antenna

Our Reddit profile  https://www.reddit.com/user/reportingaccounts100 has been running for a few years and is

Folkd

We started folkd.com not as social search engine but as a social bookmarking service. So thousands of people stored their favorite links on our servers. After a while the best websites bubbled up by being bookmarked over and over again. So we made all these quality links available through our search form and the social search engine was born.
Why is it better than normal search?
First, people are not fooled as easily as machines - they only save a link if they think it is worth it. Second they often store additional information with a link - like a description or some helpful keywords. Using folkd you will get access to this additional knowledge to discover the web faster and find new websites you probably would have missed otherwise.

Our folkd profile https://www.folkd.com/user/AdrianLawrence has only recently been added.

The reputation rank of our users calculates from various indicators. But if you constantly use folkd, post, recommend and visit the items and make some friends - you will `levelup` very soon :)

Player FM

Player FM or PlayerFM is a podcast discovery and cataloguing service which lists podcasts hosted across different podcast publishing sites. It was created by software designer Michael Mahemoff in 2011

Player FM helps you discover, download and play podcasts. We love podcasts because they are a great way for people to learn, be entertained and stay informed while on the go. We started with the Player FM web app, which works on desktop, phones, and tablets. And now, we have both the Android and iOS apps too.

Player FM is a widely-used podcast directory and podcast player with over 20 million listed episodes and 90 million users as of 2020.

And while it's vital to get listed in major directories like Apple and Spotify, platforms like Player FM are equally important; they attract podcast enthusiasts and are more search-friendly to independent creators.

Buzzsprout is now fully integrated with Player FM, allowing users to submit their podcast from their dashboard with one click. Let's take a walkthrough of the directory and review of its key features. Then, we'll show you how to list your podcast to the platform!

Here are some of our podcasts that have reached through to Player FM via buzzsprout.

Doctor Martens IPO is a big success

Player FM interface & top features

Player FM is available as a web app, Android app, on iOS, and all major operating systems and devices (iPad, iPhone, Chromecast, Android auto, and Android wear.) The player is completely free wherever you use it, with the option to upgrade to premium for bonus features (more on this in a minute.)

The home screen features popular new shows and a search bar at the top to look for content based on title or topic. When you search for a podcast, you'll get a list of sub categories to help narrow your results. The app features over 500 sub-topics, helping users zero in on specific podcasts and making your niche content easier for listeners to find.

The potential of mini-sites

This week I've been busy working on a couple of mini sites the idea being to funnel traffic from one niche site to our main site.  I've no idea if the concept will work but it certainly has been fun playing with the site builder wizard!

You've got to have fun on the web, and its always cool to learn new skills and so on.

Here are the mini-sites I've built

Report and Accounts - https://reportandaccounts.mystrikingly.com/ this is covers all the areas that we offer.

Podcasting - https://podcasting.mystrikingly.com/ this is focussed onto to our podcast offerings.

Compellingmedia https://compellingmedia.mystrikingly.com/ this has been live for a while and seems to pick up a little traffic hence the idea of trying more.

Adrian Lawrence https://adrian-lawrence.mystrikingly.com this is like a mini online CV, not had anything from it, but idea is worthwhile.

As I said at the start of this post I enjoyed the sitebuilder wizard so it was nice to be creative for a few hours even if nothing traffic wise comes from them.

Europages a great pan-european directory

Europages is a leading online directory that caters for the European business community, the company behind the site is called Visable which is a pretty good name for a business seeking to improve the visibility of companies on the internet.

They claim to have 2.4million buyers per month across 15 languages and receive around 3,000 business listing per month. The idea is simply you create a listing in your home country and the site and its team translates that and uses it across 15 other sites which are all in the language of their target audience.

If you are promoting a site online then links from reputables places help to boost your online rankings so have links from 15 good sites is therefore more helpeful than just a single one.

Anyway I tried their service our this week, and it does seem pretty impressive, here are our listings, lets see how many enquiries we get and if these all or indeed any of them get picked up and indexed by the various search engines.

The concept is a good one and of course they have registered the relevent domain name in each of the European markets they operate in, so there is good chance this works reasonable well.

Back in the day, Google hit directories hard, but the ones they targetted were little more than a list of links, whereas Europages seems to be much better than this.
